Stocism - is virtue based on the premise that, the highest good, is based on knowledge; the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature, and are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.
Acts 17:18 "Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection." (KJV, Acts 17:18) This fellow pecks up wit, as pigeons peas, And utters it again when God doth please. He is wit’s peddler, and retails his wares, At wakes and wassails, meetings, markets, fairs. (Shakespeare, Loves Labor Lost, Act 5,2) Calling Paul a "Babbler" was an Insult of the greatest degree that insinuated Paul had little knowledge and that which he did have he only gathered in bypassing, small specks of knowledge which he had no deeper understanding. Arguing in Athens with Philosophers who developed Stoicism, Epicurism, and other Philosophies like Cinicism, Skepticism was perhaps one of the Greatest feats of Apologetics ever demonstrated. Where, not only were these Philosophies challenged but their fundamental beliefs insulted to the greatest degree. Paul was the first and greatest Apologist. in understanding this section of Acts, helps to give fundamental understanding of the contrast between Stoicism and Christianity. Which fantastically is also related to and supports Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Phi. 4:13)Wednesday, May 25, 2022
